As quickly as he had blazed a determined trail cross-country, he turned around and set Twin Cradle back in his crosshairs. I’m coming, Rheia.

He tore back across state lines, bought a shovel, and pulled over by the cluster of memorials he had so recently paid his respects to on his way out of town. Without pausing for any ceremony or moment of silence this time, he trudged straight out into the field and started digging.

He dug one hole, then another. An erratic dot-to-dot of back-breaking excavation. From a bird’s eye view, the field became a constellation of graves.

Empty graves.

Places where Rheia wasn’t.
